(Mentally challenged treatment centers) Fruit Cocktail Recipes
By Gail Logan
Cocktails made of a combination of fruits are often served as the first course of a meal, usually a luncheon or a dinner, to precede the soup course. In warm weather, they are an excellent substitute for heavy cocktails made of lobster or crab, and they may even be used to replace the soup course. The fruits used for this purpose should be the more acid ones, for the acids and flavors are intended to serve as an appetizer, or the same purpose for which the hot and highly seasoned soups are taken. Fruit cocktails should always be served ice cold.
Grapefruit cocktail.
——————–
The cocktail here explained may be served in stemmed glasses or in the shells of the grapefruit. If the fruit shells are to be used, the grapefruit should be cut into two parts, half way between the blossom and the stem ends, the fruit removed, and the edges of the shell then notched. This plan of serving a cocktail should be adopted only when small grapefruits are used, for if the shells are large more fruit will have to be used than is agreeable for a cocktail.
2 grapefruits 2 oranges 1 c. diced pineapple, fresh or canned Powdered sugar
Remove the pulp from the grapefruits and oranges. However, if the grapefruit shells are to be used for serving the cocktail, the grapefruit should be cut in half and the pulp then taken out of the skin with a sharp knife. With the sections of pulp removed, cut each one into several pieces. Add the diced pineapple to the other fruits, mix together well and set on ice until thoroughly chilled. Put in cocktail glasses or grapefruit shells, pour a spoonful or two of orange juice over each serving, sprinkle with powdered sugar, garnish with a cherry, and serve ice cold.
Summer cocktail.
—————
As strawberries and pineapples can be obtained fresh at the same time during the summer, they are often used together in a cocktail. When sweetened slightly with powdered sugar and allowed to become ice cold, these fruits make a delicious combination.
2 c. diced fresh pineapple 2 c. sliced strawberries Powdered sugar
Prepare a fresh pineapple, and cut each slice into small pieces or dice. Wash and hull the strawberries and slice them into small slices. Mix the two fruits and sprinkle them with powdered sugar. Place in cocktail glasses and allow to stand on ice a short time before serving.
Fruit cocktail.
—————
A fruit cocktail proper is made by combining a number of different kinds of fruit, such as bananas, pineapple, oranges, and maraschino cherries. Such a cocktail is served in a stemmed glass set on a small plate. Nothing more delicious than this can be prepared for the first course of a dinner or a luncheon that is to be served daintily. Its advantage is that it can be made at almost any season of the year with these particular fruits.
2 bananas 1 c. canned pineapple 2 oranges 1 doz. maraschino cherries Lemon juice Powdered sugar
Peel the bananas and dice them. Dice the pineapple. Remove the pulp from the oranges in the manner, and cut each section into several pieces. Mix these three fruits. Cut the cherries in half and add to the mixture. Set on ice until thoroughly chilled. To serve, put into cocktail glasses and add to each glass 1 tablespoonful of maraschino juice from the cherries and 1 teaspoonful of lemon juice. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve.

Your Baby’s Middle Name
By Irvin Mcclain
What many parents seem to forget when naming a child is that they also must choose a middle name for their babies. This is a very important step in the process in which a child is named. A middle name not only adds to the personal identity of a person but it also gives them another term that people can refer to them as. This is highly useful when a person finds he or she has the same first name as someone else, as the middle name will almost assuredly be different. This article should help guide new parents into choosing the best middle name for their newborn child!
To start out with, middle names can be the same as a father or mother’s name. While it is usually not a good idea to name a child the second in line of a name his or her father or mother had, it is a completely different story with middle names. Many cultures and religions only have middle names in which the parent’s name is used, so it is quite common to see this happen. This middle name, however, is not the best choice and should only be used if it is tradition or if there are really no better options available.
Another way of choosing a middle name is by finding a close friend or relative and giving the child their first name as a middle name. Many times parents will use the godparent’s name as the middle name. It also makes sense to honor someone who has helped parents face and overcome struggles in life by naming a child, at least partially, after this person. And of course, if a close one has passed away recently then their first name is a good candidate for a middle name as well.
For parents who want to name their child something extravagant or weird, like “Strawberry” or “Jelly,” it is harmful and a bad decision to do so with the first name. But, again, this unorthodox name can be used as a middle name. For starters, no one close to the child really has to know or refer to them by their middle name most of the time, making an embarrassing choice okay in this regard. And if a parent is just dead-set on using a weird name, than it is of course better to use it as a middle name than a first name which identifies a child for life.
Naming a child, first or middle, is a long process in which two parents, usually, debate amongst each other and swap ideas. Each name should be carefully thought out and planned for because a child is going to have to, unless he or she changes their name, live with these names for the rest of their lives. The middle name is an important addition to any person’s name and should not be pushed aside until the very end. It should get just as much consideration as the first name. And parents remember, the middle name is the one that you can have fun with!

How to Select a Baby Monitor
By Irvin Mcclain
A baby monitor is an essential purchase for expectant parents, as it will give you the peace of mind of being able to check on your sleeping baby wherever you are in your home. Unfortunately, these monitors are the kind of device which you are unlikely to have any experience of until the time comes when you need one, and it can be difficult to know which type to buy.
There are three basic kinds of monitor: audio, video, and movement or breathing.
The audio monitor is the most popular kind, and at its most basic consists of a transmitter that you place in your baby’s nursery, and a receiver that lets you ‘listen in’, alerting you if your baby starts to cry or otherwise shows signs of waking. The very cheapest modules will have a fixed receiver that needs to be plugged into a wall socket for power, but most models nowadays have a rechargable mobile receiver which you can carry from room to room, or even outside so long as you stay in range.
The range of your monitor system will depend on a number of factors, including the construction of your home - thicker walls will reduce the range - and any sources of interference such as neighbouring monitor systems, computer wireless networks, and even microwave ovens with some models.
Interference is less of a problem these days, as most models will now let you select from a range of channels to operate on, so if you do encounter interference problems, you can switch to a new channel to hopefully clear things up. Some units only feature two or four channels which you have to manually select, while the more advanced designs now have hundreds of channels which will be selected automatically to minimize interference in the current conditions.
The more modern monitors, like so much else these days, use digital technology. What this means in practice is a clearer signal, and an increased range of operation.
Those are the basics of audio monitors, but there are other features available depending on the model. A popular one is an intercom or talkback system where you can talk to your baby through the monitor, helping you to soothe her back to sleep without the disturbance of going into the nursery. Other models may have nightlights or lullabies which you can set to play either automatically or by hand, again without entering the room, while another common feature is temperature alerts where you can see how warm the nursery is, and be alerted if it falls outside a safe range.
For most people, an audio monitor is sufficient, but some people value the extra security of having a video monitor where you can actually see your baby on a TV screen built into the receiver. If you decide to get a video monitor, make sure it has night vision capability, or it won’t be much use when it’s dark!
For complete reassurance that your baby is slepping safely, you can also get a breathing and movement monitor. This consists of a pressure pad placed under the cot mattress, which will sense if your baby stops breathing or shows other signs of distress, and alert you immediately.
The final point to consider when choosing a monitor system is price. The range is enormous, from only a few dollars up to a few hundred. For something as essential as a monitor though, it’s worth getting the best model you can afford, as after all, if the system doesn’t work well and you can’t trust it, then it’s effectively a waste of time.
